More About Stuart's Horse Artillery

The decision to portray “Flying Artillery” was and is an enormous undertaking. Devoted unit members took up the task of constructing, from original plans and raw materials, a Confederate 12-pounder cannon and limber. Members worked to secure additional horses and harness for the Artillery Fireteam. The unit has been pulling artillery since 1997 and pulling a six-up team since 1998.

Stuart’s Horse Artillery is a huge complement to the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, from pulling the cannon into an original fort in Saltville, Virginia, to pulling Stonewall Jackson’s six pounders “The Gospel” at Virginia Military Institute for Founder’s Day. We also carried Mrs. LaSalle Pickett to her final resting place with her husband General George Pickett in Hollywood Cemetery.

We also participated in the first and third H.L Hunley crews funerals in Charleston, SC where several Virginian’s were crew members. The unit carried the coffins to their burial site in Magnolia Cemetery. After the H.L. Hunley submarine was recovered in August 2000 we were asked to participate in the 3rd crews funeral service as well. The unit went to work to build a complete cassion for the event. Frank G. Collins, a Virginian was carried to the state Capitol in Richmond, Va. to lie in state on this cassion as well as in the Hunley Funeral in Charleston, SC. The service was a huge event with estimates of up to 100,000, participants and spectators.
